Why Exterior Concrete Is Different
An outdoor slab lives a harder life than a garage floor. It takes direct sun, absorbs rain, moves with temperature swings, and picks up organic staining from pollen, leaves, and mold. Moisture can also travel up through the slab from the soil beneath it. All of that changes which coating makes sense.
Sunlight and UV exposure
Standard interior epoxy tends to amber and dull in direct sun. Exterior work uses UV-stable systems so the color you pick stays closer to the color you keep.
Moisture and drainage
Standing water, poor slope, and vapor pressure from below all shorten the life of a coating. Drainage and slab moisture get evaluated before a system is recommended.
Slip resistance and texture
Patios and pool decks are finished with texture that keeps traction when wet. Around a pool, the finish also has to be comfortable enough to walk on barefoot, so texture level is a deliberate choice rather than a maximum.
Concrete condition
Older exterior concrete is often pitted, scaled, or previously sealed. Preparation may involve grinding, cleaning, crack repair, and a resurfacing layer to rebuild a consistent surface before the decorative finish goes on.
Decorative Resurfacing and Sealing
Not every outdoor project needs a full coating system. Some slabs are in good shape and only need cleaning and a penetrating sealer to resist staining. Others are worn enough that a resurfacing layer — with color and texture — makes more sense than trying to coat what's there. We recommend based on the concrete in front of us.
Pairing Indoor and Outdoor Projects
Homeowners often combine a patio with a garage project. If you're considering both, our Holly Springs garage floor coatings and polyaspartic garage floors pages cover the indoor side. Businesses with exterior walkways or patio seating can also see commercial epoxy flooring.
We work throughout Holly Springs including Sunset Ridge and Sunset Lake, plus Fuquay-Varina. Request an estimate for your outdoor concrete.
Outdoor Concrete Coating FAQs
- Can concrete coatings be installed outdoors?
- Yes, when the system is built for exterior exposure. Outdoor slabs need UV-stable materials, a texture that stays safe when wet, and consideration for moisture moving up through the slab from the soil below.
- Can I use the same epoxy from my garage on my patio?
- Usually not. Standard interior epoxy tends to discolor in direct sun and can be too slick for a wet patio or pool deck. Exterior projects are specified differently, often with a polyaspartic or textured overlay system.
- Will a coating hide cracks in my patio?
- Surface cracks and minor spalling can be repaired and visually blended during preparation. Cracks caused by settlement or ongoing slab movement will telegraph through eventually, so those are assessed before we recommend a finish.
- How slippery is a coated pool deck?
- Pool decks and patios are finished with a textured, slip-resistant surface. There is a trade-off — more texture means better traction but a slightly rougher feel underfoot and a bit more cleaning effort.
- Does North Carolina weather affect installation?
- Yes. Exterior coatings are sensitive to temperature, humidity, dew point, and rain in the cure window, so outdoor work is scheduled around the forecast.
